Man dentist show dentures teeth at dental surgery to his patient at the clinic

People who lost their teeth for various reasons whatsoever start contracting physical and psychological disorders over time. They hide their smile due to missing teeth in social terms, cannot speak properly and the sags and wrinkles around their lips give them an older and more tired expression.

Missing teeth also pave the way for serious physical problems and diseases.  Existing teeth slide into the gaps, causing the opening of the teeth and slipping in the tooth alignment. The chewing function cannot be performed properly, and various stomach and digestive problems are experienced. Jawbone which has gaps shows pain, abrasion and loss in time. The impairment of oral health imposes risk of caries formation, gingival diseases, and loss of other teeth.

For these reasons, it is very important to complete the missing teeth as soon as possible and to ensure dental integrity.

How Dental Implant Operations are Made?

The most important stage of dental implant operation is the treatment planning. For this, firstly, radiological examinations such as panoramic jaw films and CT imaging techniques are used. After examining the condition of the jawbone, implants are placed according to the planning made by the physician.

After waiting 3 months in the upper jaw and 2.5 months in the lower jaw for the fusion of the bone and implant (osseointegration), the construction phase of pre-planned prosthesis is started. Patients get their new fixed teeth after 1 or 2 weeks depending on the prosthesis to be made in this process.

What is Dental Implant?

Dental implant is an artificial tooth root produced from completely tissue-friendly material (titanium) placed in the jawbone in order to regain the loss of function and aesthetic caused by missing teeth. The researches and developments in dental technology in recent years revealed that dental implants are the most suitable alternatives to natural teeth.

Can dental implant be applied to every patient?

mplants cannot be placed in the case of systemic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis or blood diseases that cannot be controlled in the patient who will be implanted, and also in patients under the age of 18 due to poor bone development.

Apart from these, it can be easily applied to any patient whose jaw bone and height are suitable for implant placement.

How long is the useful life of dental implants?

There are two important factors that determine the useful life of dental implants. The first of these factors is the knowledge, experience and quality of the implant used by the dentist performing the operation, and the second is the patient’s social habits as well as the correct and regular oral care. For non-smoking patients, the life of the implant is much longer than that of smoking patients. The 20-year success rate of the implant placed in the mouth is over 95% when all conditions are met.

Is Dental Implant application a painful procedure?

Since the Dental Implant is placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia, the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. The pain to be felt after the effect of anesthesia is eliminated with painkillers. Such pain is not different from the pain felt after a normal tooth extraction.

What are the advantages of dental implant application?
  • Provides the convenience of changing from removable dentures to fixed teeth
  • Provides more comfortable and easy chewing
  • Healthy nutrition
  • Protection of existing healthy teeth
  • Protection of the jawbone against bone-loss
  • Good aesthetic results and a happy social life accordingly
What is a Bone Graft?

The leading condition that prevents dental implant operation is that the jawbone in the area to be implanted does not have sufficient volume. If the mouth remained toothless for a long time or if there is severe osteoporosis (bone loss), the jawbone loses its volume. In this case, it is necessary to expand the jaw bone volume vertically and horizontally by using external bone particles and to make it suitable for implant placement. This process is called Bone Augmentation (loading) and performed using bone grafts.

Currently, there are three different types of bone graft material.

This is a graft obtained from the person’s own body and is taken from one area and transplanted to another area. The graft taken from the ramus and symphysis area of the jaw is called Intraoral, and the graft taken from the iliac bone is called Extraoral Autogenous Bone Graft.

This is also a human-origin graft. However, this time the particles are obtained from another person or a cadaver. It poses a small risk of infectious diseases and immunological reactions.

These are grafts of bovine or horse origin. It has the mineral structure of cortical and cancellous bone, and hydroxyl apatite crystals. It is often used for crest augmentation and its resorption characteristic is very slight. For this reason, it is an often preferred option.
